Achievements and events

Food bank

We have started our mobile food bank. The first operation was held at the Somali Youth and Family Club (SYFC) where we distributed food to about 55 families who had registered with the Club in advance. In future, we plan to hold the distribution events on a monthly basis and at different locations. More information about the food bank and how to donate or register to receive food can be found on our website at http://www.alsadaqa.org/foodbank.

It is worth pointing out that the idea of establishing a food bank was brought forward by one of the sisters in our community. She carried out the planning and execution all by herself while using AlSadaqa for resources and support. As you may have guessed, Sr. Pashmeena is now a full-time member of AlSadaqa.

AlSadaqa Club activity book

Before the summer vacations started, AlSadaqa Club members of Medina Academy were handed out activity books. It’s a 34-page book containing fun puzzles (like crosswords, connect-the-dots etc.) that revolve around the topic of Sadaqa. This book was very well received, with non-member children also eagerly obtaining copies for themselves. This book can be freely downloaded from AlSadaqa Club’s website at http://www.alsadaqa.org/alsadaqa-club. We encourage you to obtain a copy, go through it with your children and share any thoughts you may have.

AlSadaqa Club field trip

AlSadaqa Club's members participated in Bellevue City's Earth Day Arbor Day tree plantation campaign on April 17th, 2010.

Members and parents met at 9am in the parking lot of nearby Cougar Ridge Elementary School and took a shuttle to the Lewis Creek Park.

We were allotted about a 100 trees and a location where they needed to be planted. The enthusiastic AlSadaqa Club members and their parents managed to finish their work well ahead of time.

Later in the day, AlSadaqa Club, along with other participating people and organizations, were recognized by the Bellevue Mayor Grant Degginger and City Councilman Conrad Lee.

Additional pictures from this event can be seen on our website here.

    Meetings and Collaborations

AlSadaqa is collaborating with local Islamic centers and other non-profit organizations in an effort to provide structured assistance and support to the local community. The aim is to collectively build a network of shared resources. This should simplify the assistance process and provide a unified assistance experience to the needy.

AlSadaqa plans to raise awareness of its programs and activities by conducting a series of visits to all Islamic centers in Puget Sound area. We plan to introduce the organization, its direction and current programs to community members in respective mosques. Please do attend the sessions in your respective mosques as they are scheduled.

We have met with the following Islamic centers and organizations in the last quarter.

    Islamic Center of Bothell

It was a pleasure to meet with the board members of ICOB in April. We discussed our processes for over an hour and clarified questions that they had. The ICOB board decided that they will leverage AlSadaqa to distribute their Zakat and Sadaqa funds amongst the needy and will also direct all applicants requesting financial assistance to us. Note: ICOB is not collecting Zakat and Sadaqa at their current facility but will start doing so when they move to their new facility.

Islamic Center of Eastside (Bellevue Mosque)

AlSadaqa’s mission, objectives and processes were shared with ICOE board and Imam. A phased collaboration approach was discussed. In a separate meeting, ICOE Ameer has also shown interest in working together

    Washington Islamic Chaplains

We met with Br. Faheem Siddiq to reinforce the understanding between both organizations that we will continue to provide help in re-establishing people who are released from detention centers. Washington Islamic Chaplains is already doing a very good job of helping released inmates with finding jobs and managing to stand up on their own feet. We will continue to provide financial assistance as needed.

    Hopelink

We collaborated with Hopelink on several fronts. The primary one included understanding their application process that helped us streamline and refine our own. Hopelink’s expertise also proved useful in establishing our food bank.

    Somali Youth and Family Club

We have started a close collaboration with Br. Aden Hussein from this organization. They are already doing a really great job of bringing the Somali community together and finding appropriate resources for the needy amongst them. With this collaboration, we will work together to provide financial assistance more effectively. Our food bank is also targeting the needy people in the Somali community.

    Chayya

We met with Sister Sarah and Sister Amena from Chayya in June. We shared information about services provided as well as operational details of both organizations. We were able to identify the strengths of each organization and will collaborate with each other to better serve the needs of the community. There are further meetings scheduled to take place in fall.

    Jewish Family Service (JFS)

During the first quarter, JFS provided invaluable support to us in establishing our own food bank program. We met with Derek Wertz, the manager of the food bank operated by JFS. We learned about all the intricacies of how to manage a food bank from him, which enabled us to launch our own operation.

    Booths

In addition to meeting with other organizations, we also setup booths at two events to raise awareness about the work done by AlSadaqa.

    1. The carnival at Islamic School of Seattle
    2. The Seerah Conference in Kirkland
